Prices are up, but so are sales. Sales of the recently released Supergirl medals indicate the market’s thirst for new coins and additional numismatic products from the mint, which remain popular with collectors. Counting the special privy mark coins alongside the various other special products having been released throughout the year, the mint may set a record for the number of coin types and varieties it has issued during this period.

Sales of the Supergirl Comic Art release performed surprisingly well considering these are bullion value-impacted issues and the spot price of that bullion has declined since the Wonder Woman and Batman issues were released despite the value of gold and silver having been higher at the time of the release of the earlier issues.

Not all of the collecting public is concentrating on these new issues. Intrinsically valued bullion issues continue to sell briskly. Almost any coins certified to be in top grades command strong prices.

The Heritage U.S. coin and currency auction of October 6–9 realized more than $19 million, $10,665,743 of which was the coin portion of the sale. The top price of $2,928,000 was achieved for a Professional Coin Grading Service Mint State 68 1792 half disme. While this price will raise eyebrows, what should not be overlooked is the 66 bids received for the coin. A lofty price might be expected for a coin of this rarity, but the number of bids illustrates the competitive spirit throughout the market for truly rare coins. While there are many collectors seeking modestly valued modern issues, the traditional market for rarities remains hot as well.
